MOUNT
VERNON - Madge Laverne (Farrar) Knowles, 80, of Mount Vernon, Ind., died on
Thursday, Sept. 28, 2006, at the VNA Charlier Hospice Center in Evansville, Ind.
The daughter of Elmer and Lou Della (Horton) Farrar, she was born on May 20,
1926, in Griffin, Indiana. She was a graduate of Griffin High School. On Nov. 5,
1945, she married Ernest Emmett Knowles. She was a homemaker who enjoyed
collecting antique furniture and glassware, gardening, and doing kind deeds for
others. Her bigheartedness, gregarious nature, and keen sense of humor will be
missed by her legions of friends and her family.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Emmett Knowles; her
daughter, Terri Jean (Knowles) Castleman; her parents, Elmer and Lou Della
Farrar; and her nine siblings, Clifford Williams, Helen McDonald, Melvin Farrar,
Ellis Farrar, James Farrar, Edith Farrar, Manuel Farrar, Elvis Farrar, and
Raymond Farrar.
She is survived by her daughter, Brenda E. Knowles, and her son-in-law, Paul
Kochanowski, of South Bend, Ind.; her daughter, Lucindi A. (Cindi) Knowles, of
Mount Vernon, Ind.; six grandchildren, David (Lisa) Kochanowski, South Bend,
Ind.; Erica (Graham) Fox, South Bend, Ind.; Michael (Nicole) Kochanowski,
Glenview, Ill.; Laura (Rick) Wilson, Derby, Kan.; Christopher Castleman,
Boonville, Ind.; and Lindsay Castleman, Evansville, Ind.; and eight
great-grandchildren, Kyle Kochanowski, Andrew Kochanowski, Cecilia Fox, Madelyn
Kochanowski, Matthew Looper, Elizabeth Wilson, Brayden Castleman, and Joseph
Castleman. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and
great-grandmother, as well as a caring aunt to numerous nieces and nephews in
the Tri-State area.
Before her final illness, she resided at the Mount Vernon Nursing and
Rehabilitation Center for 2 years. She served as the President of the Residents'
Council and was the 2005 Valentine's Day Queen. She thought of her fellow
residents and the staff there (especially Deb Mosby, Wes Henson, Pearl Medley,
Joann Sesky, Mary Whitlow, Maylene Ferris, and Marlene Lynch) as family.
Although Madge was the beneficiary of innumerable acts of kindness while she
lived at the Center, her daughters, Brenda and Cindi, in particular wish to
acknowledge the steadfast friendship of Winnie Pace, Bonnie McKinnies, Gina
Schmitt, and Marce Tomlinson, each of whom Madge considered as an honorary
daughter; her niece, Juanita Reeves, and Juanita's son and daughter, James and
Edith Cleveland; her sister-in-law, Catherine Curtis; her friends of many
decades, Betty Troutman, Frances Wehr, and Phyllis Woods; her friend since the
first grade, Mary Lou Phillips of Sun City, Ariz.; her ministers, Reverend
Russell Abel and Reverend Edward Miller; and the compassionate care of her
long-time physician, Dr. James A. Rice. The family also wishes to thank the
staff members at the VNA Charlier Hospice Center for their empathy and
benevolence during the last weeks of Madge's life.
Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2006, at Schneider
Funeral Home, 512 Main St., in Mount Vernon, with Rev. Russ Abell officiating
and burial in Bellefontaine Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 2 at Schneider Funeral Home.
